Hearing the strains of the soundtrack to "Black Orpheus" emanating from a neighbor's apartment during her Freshmen year at the University of Texas piqued Katrina Geenen's curiosity about Brazilian music. Eventually, a deep appreciation for the exotic, sensual rhythms set her on a life long mission to learn about, and to search for rare and authentic Brazilian recordings.Our January show host's mission to share the beat with New Orleans began to unfold when Joe Smith, brother of famed photographer Michael Smith, told Katrina about the Brock brothers' plan to start a radio station. Joe Smith told Katrina that she ought to meet Walter and Jerry Brock and play some of her records on the air. She did eventually meet the Brock brothers while bartending at Tip's. The rest, as we often say, "...is history!"Katrina Geenen is gaining respect in the circle of independent record labels in Brazil. Producers know that they can count on her to play their music for New Orleans and for WWOZ fans all over the world via the World Wide Web. Recently, an internet listener from Rio contacted the station for information about an independent release he had heard on Tudo Bem! "There is so much talent!" says Katrina. Sharing it all is truly "a labor of love!"Our show host will spend some well deserved time in Rio and Bahia during the month of January. She's excited about catching up with the latest musical waves, eating Brazilian food, meeting old friends, and soaking up inspiration for her art. Katrina is also a gifted artist who is currently planning her next show in the new millennium at The Waiting Room Gallery in the Bywater.
