- Collins Phillips is not your typical teenager. This newly graduated 18 year old is 'OZ's August Host of the Month. A member of the Original Minds Radio Project, Collins is one of the hosts for 'OZ's Brass Band Jam on Saturday evenings. He also subs for other hosts as needed, because his wide range of musical tastes allows him to diversify. The sounds of the Crescent City have always had a place in Collins's heart. Jazz is not exactly the most popular music choice for the younger set, but Collins got hooked early and fast. He loves all jazz, old and new. Collins doesn't just love music; he practices what he preaches. He has played the tuba for three years, and has marched in Mardi Gras parades with the rest of the band from McDonogh 35. Collins first came to 'OZ via the Original Minds, a group of area young people whose goal was to have their own show as an outet for their musical talents. "My parents got me into it. Believe it or not, I didn't want to do it." Collins was worried his time with the group would mess up his Mardi Gras. His high school band was marching in the Carrollton parade and he didn't want to miss it. But, he gave the group a shot (and didn't miss tbe parade either) and it eventually led him to 'OZ, firmly behind the soundboard on Saturday afternoons. At age 16, when most of us were fretting about when we would get our braces taken off, Collins began deejaying. He has been splitting the host duties of the Saturday afternoon Brass Band Jam with Brandy "Caramel" Kilbourne for the past six months. His goal is to one day have his own radio station. "Give me a show that's three hours of jazz, and I'll make it Number One in the city," he said. Collins seems to have developed quite a local following. He said, "l just got my nickname: Trail Chief." One of his number one fans cooked it up. "It comes from the Second Lines," he said. "Somebody's got to be in front leading the music. That's me, with everybody trailing behind me." He never gets lonely in the studio, he said, because listeners and fans keep the phones ringing.
