He's Australia's longest-serving judge and he's been on the High Court bench for 12 years, in which time he's earned himself the nickname "the great dissenter". That's a label he's not altogether uncomfortable with. Indeed, he calls himself a minority of one on a largely conservative bench moulded by the Howard Government.
